SÍM Residency warmly invites you to an Open House at Seljavegur 32. This evening offers a unique opportunity to enter the working environment of the current international artists-in-residence, meet them in person, and engage directly with their ongoing research and artistic processes.

The residency programme brings together artists from diverse cultural and creative backgrounds, fostering dialogue across disciplines, geographies, and lived experiences. During their time in Reykjavík, the artists have been exploring themes of trauma, action, time and space, visibility and concealment, as well as questions of identity, belonging, borders, and privilege. Their practices investigate how bodies, materials, landscapes, and social structures shape one another through processes of connection, care, support, vulnerability, protection, transformation, and regeneration.

Visitors are invited to move through the studios and encounter works in progress. The Open House presents a glimpse into artistic processes as they unfold: installations, performances, videos, material experiments, and research-based investigations that reveal both method and inquiry. Across the studios, artists engage with textile and material research through Icelandic wool, moss, lichens, stones, and other locally situated materials, examining their cultural, ecological, and political dimensions.

The projects explore themes ranging from erosion, landscape, and historical materialism to anthropology, new materialism, and the relationship between matter and the body. Temporary assemblages emerge through acts of collecting, mending, casting, documenting, and reconfiguring materials, reflecting on how histories, environments, and communities are continually shaped and reshaped. Other works address questions of Europe, union, migration, and borders, considering how identities and forms of belonging are negotiated within contemporary social and political contexts.

Rather than a formal exhibition, the event emphasizes process over completion—an invitation to witness artistic thinking as an active, evolving condition. It is an opportunity to ask questions, exchange ideas, and experience how artistic practices respond to place, material agency, collective histories, and shared concerns.

Opening as part of Fimmtudagurinn Langi (The Long Thursday), the exhibition contributes to Reykjavík’s vibrant cultural landscape, highlighting the role of international artists in shaping a diverse and evolving artistic community.

This Open House creates a shared space between artists and audience, where studio, exhibition, and conversation intersect.
