Nordic Analog Network – Silvia De Giorgi (IT, NO) artist-in-residence art project presentation.

Silvia De Giorgi is an artist and photographer who lives and works between Bolzano, Italy and Oslo, Norway. Silvia has been partecipating in SÍM Residency during May 2023 as part of The Nordic Analog Network: an artist-in-residence program between analog photography darkrooms in the Nordic countries. The collaborating partners in Iceland are SÍM Residency and Ljósmyndaskólinn Photography School. The residency program is supported by Nordic Culture Point.

Inspired by the uniqueness of the Icelandic nature, Silvia has been undertaking various photographic excursion during her stay in Reykjavík, to document the effects of the natural elements on Icelandic coastlines, glaciers, mountainsides and, in particular, volcanic rock formations. This work in progress exhibitions showcases some of the works she has created at Ljósmyndaskólinn as part of her photographic research.

Silvia's work interrogates the narratives connecting people and landscapes through a self-reflective approach. Analog photographic processes are employed in her practice to reveal experiential knowledge of the natural environment, its physical and social past. The sites explored in Silvia's photographs are found where the land is marked by traces of elemental forces such as eroded coastlines, or by the signs of human presence in the form of rock carvings and ancient monuments.

The chemicals and elements affecting geographical formations and natural objects are reflected in the darkroom. The images that emerge from expired photographic papers emphasize visions and reminiscences of particular places visited on walks and journeys. By combining and experimenting with alternative photographic processes, Silvia creates pieces that constantly investigate perceptions of landscape and the impermanence of the natural surrounding.
