The video essay Subsuns takes its title from Michelle Serres’ text written in 1980, which explores the idea that economies of “fire” and “signals” are imitations of solar energy on Earth: oil and gas reservoirs, dammed rivers, satellites, and databases. In the context of grand plans for space commercialisation and colonisation, this video invites to glimpse into a near future guided by dreams of capturing the sun – the ultimate capital. Followed by an eerie soundscape, tensions emerge between rapidly melting glaciers on Earth, a desire to press against the unknown, and future projects of backing up data on the Moon as reflections of our infinite desire to imitate the sun.
