Shapes of Belonging began at SÍM Residency as a material-based research project exploring protection, transformation, and belonging. Working with materials found in Iceland, I collected secondhand textiles, Icelandic wool, rusty metal, and other traces from the landscape and city. Rust, weathered surfaces, and patina became important starting points for thinking about change not as decay, but as transformation. Through dyeing, weaving, drawing, and material experiments, I began developing a visual language between body, landscape, and textile structures. The residency became the starting point for an ongoing artistic research into the materials and structures that hold and connect us.
