During the residency, Jani Luoma worked on a project about two extractive industries in Iceland: gravel quarrying and whaling. Through moving image, he focused on the contrast between the brutal transformation of landscapes and the somewhat imperialistic by-products of these industries, such as fish and chips meals and helicopter volcano tours. Luoma filmed, for example, the protected Rauðhólar area, where the British extracted gravel and sand to build Reykjavík Domestic Airport during World War II, and the whaling station in Hvalfjörður, where endangered fin whales are processed after being killed.
